Clinic today was not nearly as exciting as yesterday. I mainly did nursing duties, getting stuff for doctors, calling patients (with my crappy pronunciations of spanish names), etc. The doctor, were super late today (they showed up around 10:30), when they were supposed to be there between 8:30 - 9:00. Not unexpected as everything in Peru runs on Peruvian time, which is even worse than Asian time. Many patients were frustrated, as they had to wait a VERY long time to be seen. In fact, many of them left before their name was called.
When the doctor (and who I think is just a student) FINALLY arrived, what I saw next was quite shocking. Both the doctor and who-I-think-is-just-a-student (so he needed to be supervised, saw patients.... but 2 different unrelated patients... in the same room.... at the same time, the entire time. So much for patient privacy. There were even some patients that had to lift up articles of clothes for examination. I don't even know what to say to that.... In addition, the who-I-think-is-a-student wrote prescriptions (though he did double check with the doctor, sometimes, and used her stamp. I am not sure she even signed it all...) The prescription receipts is simply a small square of "grey packing paper," with no letterhead or anything. Hint: if you need drugs, get them in Peru, it is WAY too easy.
We were waiting for the bus to pick us up to bring us to the clinic, so we took some pics!
I also took some pictures of the beautiful plants in the courtyard of school, you can see them here
On the bus to the clinic!
Just a glimpse of the neighborhood I took this as the bus was driving, so it is not too sharp. Unfortunately, it is not safe to walk around, or I would walk around and take more pictures.
The waiting area of the clinic. I will get more pictures of the clinic tomorrow.
Check in table, balance, and blood pressure/pulse/respiratory rate table
Broken table that they "fixed." Yesterday, whenever a patient got on, 2 people had to hold the table so it didn't tip during each exam
Adorable tongue depressors
Towards the end of my shift today, a couple of local nursing students ran up to me and asked me to take a picture with them. I had never talked to them beforehand.... odd, but I did it anyway =) I am convinced they are fascinated by Chino's (chinese people) here. Every time they ask if I am a china, everyone always brings their hands up to their eyes to replicate the "Asian eye" (looks like -_-, incase you were unsure =) )
Spanish class in the afternoon was pretty much a waste of time as somethings were already covered in the morning class. We also spent some of the time celebrating someone's birthday. After class, MK and I decided to have fruit for dinner as we weren't too hungry. Fruit in Peru is very cheap, and mostly delicious. However, there are a few odd ones here and there, and MK bought a lacuma that had worms in it -_- We stopped by a fruit store, where I decided to look super weird by snapping photos of fruit
