Last Day at the Clinic

I can't believe we are already started to count the "lasts" of our time here in Peru, it seems like we just got here yesterday. Anyways, get ready for a picture heavy post....

MK and I went to class today...nothing interesting about that. We learned past/imperfect tense, etc.... I still hate Spanish, nothing new.

Lunch today was an amazing piece of goat meat. (Dad, I know you are jealous!)

As today is our last day at Clinica Madre de Cristo (we are volunteering for a Healthcare Campaign starting tomorrow for the rest of the week), I brought my phone along to take many, many pictures. It was a good thing I did as we had alot of waiting time. When we first got there, we had to "hide" as there were inspectors, and students should not have been there. Apparently, no one came to inspect the clinic last monday, so this morning, Peter went and got sent home cause there were inspectors there. MK and I were told it would be ok for us to go in the afternoon, so we did... for a photo session pretty much. We were able to shadow Dr. Rodriguez though for a bit....

With Eddy, our Taxi driver to most locations. Eddy is super nice and knows how to speak English as he lived in the states for awhile (mostly Chicago). On our way home today, he showed us pictures of his 3 kids!

 In front of the Clinic...

Check-in area/nurses station. See the BP cuff? That is the only one in the ENTIRE clinic, and the clinic serves MANY different specialties, including dentistry, optometry, peds, OB/GYn, etc.... ONE BP cuff... that's crazy. Sigh, only in America is everything is in "necessary" excess...

MK had not been on the rooftop yet, so we went up for a photo session during our hideout. I felt like we were in WWII =)

MK is super strong =)

With Isabel, our translator

Kind of blurry, sorry!

New extension to the Clinic. If this was built in the US, I feel like the construction people would hide it from the rest of the hospital until it is completed, not in Peru though!

We still had extra time after our rooftop shoot, so here are some selfies....

With my new earrings that cost me <$2 US=)

After about 45min, Dr. Rodriguez came to work and we shadowed him. The very first patient that came in today was complaining of stomach pain/discomfort. He finds a potential "cyst," in which he told the patient that "the cyst will come out crying in a couple of months." MK thought it was a very strange way to announce to the pt that she is pregnant <- for those of you who didn't catch the doctor's statement. This woman was 7 weeks pregnant, and she was the skinniest thing I ever saw, well not really, but she was muy pequeño, lucky genes she got. It was very adorable when she and her husband hugged it out and were super excited when she got off the ultrasound table. First time I have witnessed someone being told they are preggo. Cute!

Ultrasound table....with a cloth that never gets changed

Medical tools and knick knacks. The brown packages on the left are actually sterilized kits. I am not quite sure how things stay sterilized in those packages. The brown paper wrapped flat sticks are tongue depressors. Their alcohol, iodine, and other solutions are put into water bottles/ketchup bottles/ soap dispensers, it is quite amusing.

Table for GYN stuff. Yes, where the medication that is used patient after patient is applied. GROSS!

The consultation desk. The prescription pads are simply note pads with a letter head. No carbon copies or water marks or anything. Then again, patients don't need doctor's prescriptions for medications. Pharmacists could write prescriptions as they please at the pharmacy; the smart patients are the ones who know not to follow those prescriptions

With Dr. Rodriguez...

Princess JS was sick today, so MK and I, escorted the princess to get some soup.... at a Chifa Restaurant.

It is very sad that prices in the US look similar, if not more expensive than this (but this is in Soles, conversion rate is ~2.6 Soles = $1), but much smaller portions.

The S/9 wonton soup that JS ordered that had alot of wontons, and yes, that is chicken meat on top. A very good deal indeed

We walk by this stand alot, everyday in fact, and we are sure the lady is able to identify us. I have always wanted to try her chicken feet, so tonight, I finally did. S/1 for 4 chicken feet. That's less that 50 cents for 4 chicken feet! It was very very good and the green sauce (The thing in the middle) was nice and spicy, just the way I like it.

4 chicken feet with some sweet potato. YUM!
